what i'm saying about the debates, romney has a chance, there is no filter and he'll be able to make the case and certainly afterwards, president is going to, and pundits like me are going to say what they interpreted for people the fact that the audience is going to be so huge that i don't think that people listen to that interpretation. >> one last one for you, no. in your heart. look, i respect you, i think you're a very honest man, if your heart. do you think that a second obama term, he would stay hard left or he'll move to the center? i say he stays hard left. what do you say? >> look, i think there are a lot of democrats and progressives that think he is to the center. and i think he has to move to the center because there's no way -- look, whether romney wins or obama wins, there's got to be compromise. either romney has to compromise with the democrats in the nate or the president does, otherwise we're not going to get anything does unless these two parties start working together. stuart: and he'll bypass congress and govern by executive decree, he can do it. >> he can, but

i think that we forget that romney is a great debater. we saw in the primaries that he was really everyone's favorite in the debates. so i think we can expect that he will do a good job. frankly, i would argue that he's more comfortable on the debate stage than he is ordering a milk shake at mcdonald's. so i do think he's in his element on the debate stage. he will have memorized lines. the only way he's really going to, like i said, hit it out of the ballpark is to show us a side of him that he's never seen before and really surprise us. >> abby, let me ask you one question. the last time we had an i incumbent candidate that was challenged, ignoring bob dole's attempt to bring it on kind of. listen to this in their debate. >> mr. president, what do you say to senator dole's point that this election is about keeping one's word? >> when i ran for president, i said we could cut the deficit in half and we cut it by 60%. i said our economic plan would produce 8 minullion jobs and we created 10 million jobs. >> i can only tell thaw i don't thi

did he not watch those debates? has he never seen mitt romney debate? >> i think that is a very good question, piers, because you would think that in talking about the preparation, you would take a look at all of the debates and actually, the one with newt gingrich is the one that i think they needed to take a look at, because that's where he eviscerated the speaker, and he did it by telling the blatant lies that newt gingrich actually talked about the next day. so he should have been prepared for those kinds of attacks. he should not have looked surprised and he should have been much more deft at not just defending his own record and talking about where we have been and what he has done to shore up the middle class and what he will continue to do, but he should have absolutely brought up the 47%, his offshoring, the fact that mitt romney does not want to come clean on his income taxes and i think that would have been a much different debate. >> i can see that crystal is jumping in there. unfortunately, you can't do it just yet. we have to have a commer

lot more people have to get to know govern orromnor romney so more important debate. i think he has to be presidential. i think he has to convey the kind of person that people would be comfortable with as president. i tend to think we kind of score this as if it's a boxing match or basketball game. >> you know what it's like to debate mitt romney. i don't want to rehash any old wounds but i do want to play just some of the thing you guys got into and ask what he's like as a debater. >> governor romney, was new york a sanctuary city? >> absolutely. called itself a sanctuary city. in fact, in the welfare reform act president clinton brought forward said they were going to end the sanctuary policy of new york city, the mayor actually brought a suit to maintain its sanctuary city status. >> it's unfortunate, but mitt generally criticizes people in a situation in which he's had far the worst record. for example, in his case, there were six sanctuary cities. he did nothing about them. there was even a sanctuary mansion at his own home, illegal immigrants were being employed
